Kings Liver Pharmacy have provided the following information:

The shingles National Immunisation Programme is changing from 1 September 2023 and more people are now eligible for a shingles vaccine, including anyone 50 years and over with a “severely weakened immune system”. The definition of severe immunosuppression for the Shingrix vaccine programme includes anyone receiving immunosuppressive therapy for a solid organ transplant and so all liver transplant patients over the age of 50 should be offered two doses of the shingles vaccine over the next year.

Your GP will contact you when they are able to offer you the vaccine;  if you have not been offered the vaccine by August 2024 we would suggest you contact your GP practice to arrange this.

The vaccine which should be used is called Shingrix® and this is not a live vaccine so is safe for liver transplant patients. Before your vaccine is administered please double check this is the brand being used.

Shingrix® can be administered alongside other vaccines, including the flu vaccine and Covid boosters.
