Liver Transplant Co-ordinators
The Co-ordinators are there to answer your questions and they encourage contact from patients, even if it something you feel is relatively unimportant. They will always have time for you!
It is possible to contact the Co-ordinators by phone or email.
Pre-transplants patients should always contact the Co-ordinators by telephone. While you are on the list it is important they are always aware of your current condition. Make sure you let them know if, for example, you plan a trip away from home, or there is any change at all in your medical condition. The most appropriate way to contact a coordinator currently is via the paging system. Dial the switch board 0203 299 9000 option 4 (operator) then ask to page the liver coordinators. The on call coordinator will call you back.
Post-transplant patients should also make contact via telephone if the matter is in any way urgent. For non-urgent queries it is also possible to contact them via email – you would normally receive a reply to an email within two to three days.

Dietitians
Advice provided by the Dietitians at Kings is featured on our web site. You are encouraged to follow this advice wherever possible – some is about avoiding certain things as they might interfere with your medication – which are lifelong – and others that are more likely to cause infections which are most important in the early days following Transplant. If you have any query at all, the Dietitians are more than happy for you to contact them during office hours for clarification. Outside office hours you should contact the Co-ordinators.

Pharmacy
The Pharmacy section of our web site provides a lot of information, together with some Frequently Asked Questions.
Contact Pharmacy direct for any questions about medication – for example how other prescribed or over the counter medication might interact with your immunosuppression medication – prescription requests or help with any supply issues. Outside normal office hours contact the Transplant Co-ordinators.
Alcohol and Substance Misuse Clinical Nurse Specialist
Ian Webzell RMN MSc
Ian is the Alcohol & Substance Misuse Clinical Nurse Specialist working within the Liver Unit at King’s College Hospital. He works alongside a Consultant Psychiatrist in Addictions to support people with alcohol and other substance use disorders. They provide comprehensive substance use assessments and have significant experience in helping people to reflect upon and make changes to their alcohol or drug use. Additionally, they are able to guide you through alcohol and drug recovery services to enable you to make informed decisions about your treatment options.

PALS is an NHS-wide service that offers support, information and assistance to patients, relatives and visitors. They can also provide help and advice if you have a concern or complaint that staff have not been able to resolve for you.

Specialist Social Worker (Liver Transplant & Liver Transition)
Paul McKie MSW (Social Work) MSc (Psychotherapy)
As the liver transplant social worker, Paul provides psychosocial support to enable patients and their family to deal with the life challenges associated with transplantation, and to help manage these difficulties as effectively as possible during all phases of the transplant process. Paul also works as part of the Transition Team that addresses both the physical and psychosocial wellbeing of the young adults living with liver disease.
Contact Paul if you have any concerns about your social circumstances or emotional well-being. In addition, Paul can also link you in with the peer mentor scheme if you feel it would be helpful to talk with a Listen Mentor.
Mentors are told which patients would benefit from a visit by the co-ordinators and ward staff and patients sometimes request to see a Mentor. They visit once a week according to a rota so a different Mentor visits each week.
N.B. Mentoring services are currently carried out remotely.
In addition to this service, our most experienced mentor, Maureen, who is 27 years post transplant, is happy to chat (at a reasonable hour) or answer any non medical queries. Her Listen phone number is: 07470 912487
